(More customer reviews)Despite the excellent concept, this muffin/cupcake pen does not deliver. From start to finish, it was messy and wasteful. Since the whole point of the pen is to be neat and clean - you know, dispensing perfect little portions of batter instead of messing with the spoon and big globs of displaced batter - it has to actually be neat and clean to be worth the money (and space in your kitchen, and time to clean it every time). It is, unfortunately, not neat or clean. It's a hot mess!
First, you fill up the base of the pen with batter. The base is medium sized, but not big enough to prevent globs of batter from falling onto the counter as you fill it up. Also, the pen is not big enough to hold all of your batter (I made 12 muffins), so you'll need to refill it. Your hands will be sticky from filling up the pen in the first place, so this is not a "clean" operation. Second, you fill up your muffins from the tip of the pen. This worked well for about 3 muffins and then the pen started to make a noisy suction sound as it was filled with air bubbles. Messy spurts of batter emerged, and other times it took quite a bit of pressing and shaking to get more batter out. It was HARD to get the batter out for nearly half the muffins!! Then you refill it and repeat. Then you have to get out the spatula and scoop out about another muffin's worth of batter from the pen, because it won't come out on its own - and my relatively small one was not small enough to get out all of the batter, so some was wasted. Add that to the wasted batter from the counter when I was trying to fill the darned pen. Then you get to clean this messy, sticky greasy thing...and then find a nice tall space to store it. [I'm willing to pay return shipping to get this thing out of my kitchen!]
So, in conclusion, stick to the old spoon/mini ice-cream scoop/measuring cup and keep measuring those muffins the old fashioned way. Sure, there might be a bit of a mess, but there will be JUST as much of a mess with this cupcake pen, probably MORE. And with your simple spoon, at the end of the operation, that's all you have to clean and store...a spoon.
